What Happens When You Hit Ledge (And You Just Might)

They don’t call New Hampshire the Granite State for nothing. And I’ve hit enough ledge in Massachusetts to know it’s everywhere – Worcester County, North Shore, even places you’d never expect.

Here’s what the franchise dealers don’t tell you: ledge removal can cost more than the pool itself. I’ve seen homeowners get blindsided with $40,000-$60,000 change orders because nobody bothered to check what was under their backyard before signing a contract.

How We Handle Ledge Different

Before you sign anything, we talk about ledge. What’s the soil like in your town? Have your neighbors hit rock? Is there exposed granite anywhere on your property? Sometimes we know from experience – I’ve been digging holes in these towns for 30 years.

If we hit ledge during your fiberglass pool installation, I’m operating the excavation equipment and the hydraulic hammer. I’m not subbing it out to some rock guy who charges by the hour and takes his sweet time.

When rock excavation is required, ledge removal costs depend on the depth, hardness, and accessibility of the material encountered. Based on past projects, excavation work involving ledge has often remained in the low to mid-teens depending on site conditions.

Ledge-Prone Areas We’ve Worked In

Massachusetts: Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, Ipswich, Newburyport, Groton, Harvard, Bolton, Berlin, Princeton, Rutland, Holden, Sterling, most of Worcester County

New Hampshire: Pretty much everywhere – Salem, Windham, Derry, Londonderry, Hudson, Pelham, Hollis, Amherst, Milford, Mont Vernon

Rhode Island: Lincoln, Smithfield, Glocester, Burrillville, Cumberland

If your property is in one of these areas, we need to have the ledge conversation before quoting your fiberglass pool installation. No surprises.

What Else You’ll Need for Your Fiberglass Pool (And Yes, I Know A Guy)

A fiberglass pool is just the start. You’ll likely need:

  • Fencing – Required by code for all Massachusetts pool installations
  • Patio/Decking – Pavers, stamped concrete, exposed aggregate, or broom finish
  • Electrical service – For the pump, lights, and heater

I’ve been handing work to the same contractors for years. They’re grateful for the referrals, they do good work on fiberglass pool projects, and they won’t gouge you. It’s another reason I can keep fiberglass pool prices low – the relationships work both ways.

Fiberglass Pool FAQ

How long does fiberglass pool installation take?

Most fiberglass pool installs are complete in 1-3 weeks, weather permitting. I could easily say 2-3 days, but there are other factors like how the dig goes, and other contractors timelines. We do what we do best and are at the mercy of the other specialists schedules.

Do fiberglass pools work in New England winters?

Yes. Fiberglass pools flex with freeze-thaw cycles better than concrete. I’ve been installing fiberglass pools in Massachusetts for 30 years without issues.

Do you offer fiberglass pool financing?

MGK Pools works with several pool financing companies. We sell the shells on our website, with Affirm: Buy now pay later. Or Ask for details.

Why are your fiberglass pool prices so much lower than other pool companies?

I own the excavation equipment. I don’t have commissioned salespeople. I buy factory direct and sell the fiberglass pool near cost. I make money on the install.

Do you install fiberglass pools in New Hampshire?

Yes. We install fiberglass pools throughout Southern New Hampshire including Nashua, Salem, Derry, Londonderry, and surrounding towns.

What if we hit ledge during excavation?

We discuss ledge potential before you sign anything. If we hit rock, I own the hydraulic hammer – my ledge removal has never exceeded $15,000, while I’ve seen competitors charge $35-50k or more.

Inground Fiberglass Pool Installation Cost Breakdown

For excavation, Installation, equipment, plumbing, and backfill 20k-25k depending on size. Trucking, loading and disposing of excavated materials 2k-5k depending on size and if we can find a free dump site in your area (usually can). Water cost roughly $400-$1200 depending on pool size. Electrical service 3k-8k with bonding included. Cement collar for top of pool edge 3k-4k. To fence in a pools with standard black aluminum post with two gates $6k to 8k depending on size. Crane for unloading and setting pool if needed, $1200-$2400 depending on location. Patio depends on size and type, need to price this per job, Winter safety cover $2k-5k. Automatic Pool cover (cannot be used for winterizing, but can be used in place of a fence) $17k-20k. Heater $3k-6k with installation.

All in with us you are closer to 60k-90k, compare that to the $100,000-$150,000 you’ll pay at the franchise dealers for the same fiberglass pool. Same quality, fraction of the price.

Why are our fiberglass pool prices so much lower? I learned this from Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits – win-win-win. You win with a great price on your fiberglass pool. My crew wins with fair pay and steady work. I win on the excavation and installation. Everyone’s happy. No need to mark up the shell 100%!

Why does shipping fiberglass pools cost so much? Smaller pools are the easiest to deal with, but once you get to mid size pools, it requires two follow cars for the wide load, each follow car cost $2.00/per mile, so that’s $4/per mile for the two cars, and depending on the route they require a police escort especially on the larger pools here in Massachusetts.
